Digetic and Non -Digetic Sound

Why is sound in important in a TV drama ?

Digetic sound is an sound that would relate to what is on  the screen .The sound that we hear is what we are expected to hear  ;if an character was talking then sound would come out of the characters mouth . Another example is if a plate was to fall on to the ground then there would be a smashing sound.

Non - Digetic Sound is the sound that the viewer does not expect to hear, it is a non-visible sound .An example of a non-digectic sound is music that is added in the background , that would not be there originally . In addition an narrator talking about what is happening within the scene , is not an original sound therefore is a non-digetic.

Sound is an important  element within in a TV drama , as the sound is associated with the type of genre . The Science Fiction drama that I watched had a space music therefore I was able to associate it with the genre . The sound within Doctor Who made the TV drama seem more realistic , as there was use of explosions .The screaming children helped to  indicate to me that there was  something scarey going on . Another scene within Doctor Who involved a man with chains on his legs , it was clear that he was a criminal , it helped me draw my attention the man . There was a sound of lighting this could indicate to me that there is danger  and something dramatic is going to happen.

To conclude this essay sound has an important role within a TV drama because it helps make the audience feel as if there are present within the scene. Sound is important because it can make an TV drama feel more realistic .
