An image + a point of view = representation

What view of people or issues are being conveyed to the audience

Hollyoaks- the views that are being conveyed to the audience are women to be very daring, as a girl is eating an apple from a tree. This can be conveyed as a sin, from a biblical story of Adam and Eve.  The actress that is taking the apple from the tree can be conveyed to be the seductive lady that all men within the drama like .Men have very bold backgrounds within the mise-en-scene, this is showing their personality and what sort of characteristics they have. Another character within Hollyoaks is a Villain he was shown to be throwing cards. This may imply that he may like to trick people and this also shows that he has come intelligence because being a magician is not easy.

Tudors - There was a character with a gold embroaded jacket , this shows that he is very wealthy . The men who attacked the man within the scene are a shown wearing the same clothes. This may mean that they are part of the kings army ,compared to moerdern society they can be seen to be aprt of a gang

Who is being represented?

Hollyoaks – the people who are represented within Hollyoaks are young people. They are repsrented to be young and free having fun within their life. Men are portrayed to be handsome and quirky this is shown within the mise-on –scene. Women are represented to be sexy and they are dressed as if they were going out. They can be portrayed to be very dominating within the opening sequence.

Tudors – men are repsresnted to be very dark and serious ; as there was an very violent scene , this shows that they are very masciline .  There is
not a women within the scene this is an underrepresented of females.  As within the tudor era men was the most dominate.  A character within the scene is attackedv and left, this shows that people have no compassion for others , as he was left to die .

How far do the representations challenge or conform to dominant representations and ideologies?

Hollyoaks –conform to the ideologies within today’s society, women appear to be skinny and perfect. They are seen to have the ideal body and nice hair and a pretty face this fits the ideologies that the media presents to use. The camera has positioned the camera to make the women look taller and have a skinner face. There was a representation of gay people this is fitting the ideologies within society, he is portrayed to be famine and not to serious. Moreover another ideology that is within Hollyoaks is the villain he appears to be quite dark, as hew is dressed in black, this is typical convention of a television drama.

Tudors – does fit thev idelogies of society within the Tudor era , as men are seeen to be dominate , as women were not shown within gthe scene . In the tudor era men are seen to be the provider and women are seen to be the stay at home wife . Another ideology that the tudors meet is  men user to fight for the power , this is shown within Tudors.

EXT: how far is the audience positioned to take up a preferred view?

Hollyoaks – this takes up a preferred view as women are represented to be very flirtatious and concientious of their appearance, this does fit the preferred view. As women within society are seen to slim and very sexy and Hollyoaks shows this. Men are shown to have a preferred view as they are also very contiencous of their appearance. This is realistic, as men want to seem attractive to the opposite sex.

Lost Essay Questions

What narrative structures are evident in the first episode of Lost ?what affect does it have on the audience ?
The narrative is defined as the of events that happen within a Television Drama. The events within the drama help create a story and there are different ways the television dramas present the events.
There is a point of view narrative that occurs within lost. An example of this is when the cameras follow an individual character, there is use of point of view shots and music . The point of view narrative show what is happening form that characters perspective. An point of view narrative has an effective on the audience because they are able to view in the characters eyes , this allows the audience to become closer the character ,that the television  drama is focusing on.
There is use of tragedy , this is the most frequent narrative used in lost . This used throughout Lost as people die  and suffer from serious injuries . An example were tragedy is used in lost, is when a lady is unable to breath and it almost looks like the lady is suffocating . This has an emotional effect on the audience as the characters looks they are in pain and close to death .
To conclude this question an theorist idea , will help support the point that I have made within the essay The narrative theorist , where this concept has come from is the equilibrium theory . This theory suggests that there is use of disruption, this is evident is Lost , a the characters end up is deserted island . The characters are going to try and repair the disruption, in the case of Lost  , try to find a way to be rescued from the deserted island .  This theory is used to help create lost and the effect is on the audience is that the want the people that are in the disruption to become free from it .

Discuss what sound techniques used in the first episode of lost . What affect does it have on the audience.
There are a variety of sound techniques used in the first episode of lost especially in the first few scenes, the sound varies . Sound has an impact on the audience because it can help the audience imagine the scene the director is trying to create, it also help back up the imaginary shown on the screen .
At the start of the first episode there is sound used to show what is happening to the character. An example of this within the episode , is when the man runs through the trees , he has an increase in heart rate and it becomes faster . This is effective use of sound because the audience is able to understand what is happening to the characters body . Moreover this technique is useful because it helps create suspense upon the audience, as it makes the audience wonder what is going to happen within the next scene .
Throughout the first scene of lost there is consistent sound that we can hear in the background . The sound that is repeated throughout the scene is people screaming . This is effective because the audience is able to know that something bad is happening within the scene . It also makes the audience feel pity for the characters as they know that they are in pain.
Within Lost there is different types of non-diegetic sound added in each scene. An example of this from lost is when there is slow music added in the background. It is non-diegetic because the slow violin music is not what we can hear , it has been edited in . This has an effect on the audience as the tempo of the music is slow , the audience begin to build emotion and become more sympathetic to the characters within the scene .
The diegetic sound is very prominent in lost , this is used when you can hear the gushing of the trees and movement of the water . This makes the audience feel as if they are a part of the scene because they can hear what they can see .
In lost there is a lot of editing techniques that have been done to the sound. An example of this from the scene is when the sound became louder. This is effective because it helps create a build-up , as the audience want to know what is going to happen next .
Sound plays an important role in Lost because it helps the audience to have a better understanding of the plot.  Sound also  has an effective on the audience because when there is fast tempo the audience is able to identify that action is happening, if there is slow music the audience knows that something bad is happening .

How is realism used in this episode of Lost?
Within the first episode of Lost there is variety of elements conveying realism. The attire that each character is wearing shows what profession and personality of each individual .This was evident within the first episode of lost
Each character wore the same outfit , there was a man from the beginning he was wearing a suit. This is an element of realism because it shows that he is a businessman on a plane , this is a realistic example , as business people need plans.  Moreover it is realistic as the character has no costume change because they are standard.
There was use make up and effects to make the first episode of Lost seem realistic. An example of this from the episode is when the man had an injury, there was a mass of blood that was shown, when he was removed away from underneath the plane.  This is realistic because the blood looked as if it were real; this helps make the scene feel as if it were a real if situation.
Another example of how realism was used within the first episode of lost because there was when people were running way from the blown up plane. This shows realism because humans would run away from an exploding plans is it our natural reflex to do so.
Within the first episode of Lost there are real life situations that happen all the time that are not planned of this from the first episode of lost there was a prergnant woment , who was about to go into labour .This is is an element of realism because the actress makes it seem as if see were pregnant and going into labour , situations in life occur like this all of the time .
Moreover there in lost there was realism portrayed through the characters , as there is someone who always will take charge and control things . An example of this from the program is the man who tries to go round and help people , he used his common sense and took charge. This is an example of realism because there is someone who will take charge weather it is in the workplace or an athletics team, there will always be someone to control a situation.
To conclude this question there was realism featured within the first episode of lost , this is to make the show relatable to the target audience . Things that help the Lost seem realistic is the use of sound , setting and the personalities of each of the characters

How does it fit the conventions of a TV Drama.
Lost does fit into the conventions of a television drama because there are so many elements that are identifiable from watching the first example .
Within the television drama there is always the same characters that appear each; within Lost the same characters are shown throughout the same episode. This is effective because it makes the same show seen consistent, if the characters were to change each week it would become confusing to the audience.
Lost also aims to represent reality, as I mentioned previously there are real life situations featured within lost . An example of this was, where this has been used when the man had an accident. This is an example of a real life situation, therefore the audience are able to relate to it .
There is also use of a title sequence, this is commonly used in television drama.  Lost has a title sequence, that is very short ,but the writing is easy to identify with the show . This is useful because it helps the audience to become familiar with the show.
An television drama also aims to represent reality, lost does have feature of real life situations that viewers can relate to. However the setting is not realistic it is fictional.
There is use of conventional shots within a television drama , that the viewer becomes familiar . This type of shot is called an shot reverse shot , Lost does have use of this type of shot. An example when this is used in Lost , is when there is dialogue between the characters , this happens throughout the first episode of lost . This is useful for the audience because they are able to view conversations clearly , then  the audience is able to have an better understanding of what is going on in each scene.
Throughout Lost there are many conventions that make it a television drama successful ; the use of setting ,  sound and other factors are used to help create the drama .

Research

I am going to research the following theorist: Vladimir, Tzvetan Tordorov ,Claude Levi-strauss and the Roland Barthers .

Vladmir was a Russian  was a Russian film critic and he came up with a Theory called the 7 Character Roles believes that there are 7 different types of characters involved in order to have a successful drama.  The Villain is an important character as it is always in confrontation with the hero. Another character is magical helper this helps create the hero. Another character that Vladimir thought is important is the Princess and the hero has to try to save the her. In the end the hero and princess end up happy ever after. His theory created about fairy tales and examples where this theory is adapted is Romeo and Juliet.

Tzvetan Tordorov is a Belgium theorist; he believes that characters should be set in a fictional scene. In order for it to be successful there must be disruption within the scene in order to create a story.  He also believes that characters must solve a problem, in order for there to be a hero to be created.

Claude Levi-straus is French theorist and he left a legacy with his knowledge; came up with the Binary Opposition, he believed that it is important to understand a meaning of a world. He believes that words have two meanings against them. An example of this , would be left and right and front and back .

Roland Barthes has  created the 5 codes to make an successful narrative. He believes that the story should not be fully explained. The Proaretic Code is there must be tension in order for there to be tension to be created. The semantic Code is the story must have some meaning behind it . Another code he created is The Symbolic Code  it is similar to another code however there is more drama and enthusiasm added. The last code is  the Culture Code  the narrative piece can include an element or science to make it seem realistic .

Digetic and Non -Digetic Sound

Why is sound in important in a TV drama ?

Digetic sound is an sound that would relate to what is on  the screen .The sound that we hear is what we are expected to hear  ;if an character was talking then sound would come out of the characters mouth . Another example is if a plate was to fall on to the ground then there would be a smashing sound.

Non - Digetic Sound is the sound that the viewer does not expect to hear, it is a non-visible sound .An example of a non-digectic sound is music that is added in the background , that would not be there originally . In addition an narrator talking about what is happening within the scene , is not an original sound therefore is a non-digetic.

Sound is an important  element within in a TV drama , as the sound is associated with the type of genre . The Science Fiction drama that I watched had a space music therefore I was able to associate it with the genre . The sound within Doctor Who made the TV drama seem more realistic , as there was use of explosions .The screaming children helped to  indicate to me that there was  something scarey going on . Another scene within Doctor Who involved a man with chains on his legs , it was clear that he was a criminal , it helped me draw my attention the man . There was a sound of lighting this could indicate to me that there is danger  and something dramatic is going to happen.

To conclude this essay sound has an important role within a TV drama because it helps make the audience feel as if there are present within the scene. Sound is important because it can make an TV drama feel more realistic .

Bird-eye View

The camera shows the whole school by ,filming at a birds-eye view  angle. The audience can become familiar with the schools surrounding. It also creates an element of realism.
